Friends – you thought you never wanted but ended up needing and never looking back.

So this week its all been about the tv programme “Friends Reunion”. For me, I cant lie, I loved that television series and was only around 21 years old when it was released. Every Friday night, I would sit down in front of the television to watch channel 4 at 9pm,  desperate to get the three claps on time during the opening theme.  It was a major part of life for a lot of people.  If you have never watched the television series, its about 6 friends,  a jock actor,  a posh daddy’s girl,  a controlling chief, a hippy, one that works with bones and a joker.

Any way seeing the 6 actors return to the set, I sat there and saw all the emotions that they were going through. It was great to see a group of friends, that haven’t seen each other for over 17 years, get back together as if they never left.  Looking at this reminded me of the game Rugby.  I have been at the same rugby club since I was 12 and I can’t thank rugby enough for the group of friends that I have.  Thinking back to it, if I had never taken up the game there is no way I would have been friends with some of the people that rugby has given me.  I have friends that are a lot older and younger than me, but when we meet up and go out, in my head, we are the same age as each other.

If I am honest and had to decide with character I am similar to, I am probably a Ross with a bit of Monica in there as well.  But been brought together as friends with chavs, rockers, business people, people with different likes or beliefs, I wouldn’t change any of them.  They have opened my eyes to stuff a 12 year me would never of done (Yes I am boring),  going to download,  lads holidays and rugby tours,  with the greatest stories to tell, however I can’t (what stays on tour….).

Having not been able to see them for over a year (a proper night out not zoom calls or online quiz nights), it has been great to spend time with them and as always,  everyone gets there 15 minutes of being roasted and then it moves onto someone else.  Within minutes we are laughing,  downing pints , drowning our sorrows and looking forward to future events, to the point it does not feel like we have survived a lockdown but it just feels like yesterday, we were out in town on a night out .

I never thought I would be mates with the friends that rugby have given me. However, I couldn’t live my life without these friends and thank them so much for being a major part of my life.  I know they will be there for me whenever I need them and vice vesra.  Even if I haven’t seen them in years, if we get back together, just like the television friends actors, that it would feel like we have never been away .

Also, I am  so lucky to have my school friends,  who I meet in Primary school.  Once again these are people who I can’t thank enough for being my friends. I am blessed to have many groups of friends,  everyone different to me and each other and I would not want it any other way.  They keep me laughing, pick me up and keep me grounded if my head gets to back.  They are a shoulder to talk to and loyal to the end.

Treasurer your friends, they will always be with you but you don’t know how much time you have with them. Never judge a person by their job or looks, as they might be the most loyalist friend you can have.

Peace out, live the dream
